Pilot 2: Testing the idea that Combined Authorities can play an important role in supporting school improvement.

Within just two years, approximately three quarters of schools and trusts within Northumberland, Newcastle, and South of Tyne—comprising the constituent local authorities (LAs)—are actively engaged in diverse projects spearheaded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA). The LAs play a pivotal role in developing the programme. Further details can be found here.

Below are links to media reports covering some of our programmes:

  1. Schools Week features an article by Jamie Driscoll, Mayor of the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), emphasising the significant role his authority plays in supporting schools and children: Schools Week article
  2. Education Today covers a project with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) aimed at engaging employers, with insights provided by one of the participating teachers. The project involves 10 secondary schools and 1500 pupils: Education Today article
  3. SecEd also discusses the same project, providing additional insights: SecEd article
  4. Additionally, Headteacher Update covers an oracy project involving 100 primary schools and 250 teachers, focusing on embedding oracy education into the curriculum: Headteacher Update article

It’s worth mentioning that in the devolution deal for the new North East Combined Authority, inclusive of the North of Tyne and four other local authorities, the Department for Levelling Up recognises the success of the programme. As a result, the Department for Education (DfE) pledges to collaborate in extending it.
