We welcome the Times Education Commission Report on 15th June 2022, supported by no less that two former Prime Ministers, 9 ex- Secretaries of State for Education and business leaders. The report had a number of recommendations pertinent to the LocalED project, shared below:
- ‘A reformed Ofsted that works collaboratively with schools to secure sustained improvement rather than operating through fear and a ‘new school report card’ with a wider range of metrics including, wellbeing, school culture, inclusion, and attendance to unleash the potential of schools’
- The main recommendation in the Report was for changes to the secondary curriculum and assessment. It advocated a British Baccalaureate offering broader academic and vocational qualifications at 18, parity of funding for vocational and academic routes and a slimmed down set of exams at 16 to bring out best in every child. They advocate a curriculum which teaches what are called the ‘21st century competencies’ including communication, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking. Such an approach would require the kind of approach to accountability that we are looking to trial.
- Better training for teachers to identify children with SEND and a duty on schools to be responsible for pupils after they have been permanently excluded.
